Our Wildflowers

The wildflowers in our nursery are propagated from seed, natural off-sets, and cuttings. We use seed whenever possible to ensure the genetic diversity of our stock. However, even in nature, some species such as the exquisite Twinflower, Linnaea borealis, have low germination rates and require up to a decade to reach maturity. In these cases,we fall back on the use of off-sets
or cuttings, selecting, for each species, parent plants from distinct populations to ensure as much genetic diversity as possible.

Our plants are grown in natural soils amended with organic composts. We use neither pesticides nor chemical fertilizers. To know more about our approach to plant propagation please click here

The plants available from our nursery are presented in two alphabetical lists, one using common English names. the other, standard Latin binomials.

Availability

The availability of plants of a given species varies from year to year, depending upon the quantity of seed that was successfully collected and germinated, as well as the number of seedlings that have reached maturity.

To Buy Plants at the Garden

We believe that the best way to buy plants is to examine them in person to determine if their characteristics and habitat requirements suit your garden before making a selection. The Garden is open for sales Wednesday through Sunday from Earth Day until Father's Day, and again from Labour Day until Halloween. As we have no support staff and often participate in special events, it is best to check our calendar of events on our home page and contact us for an appointment before visiting. We will do our best to fit your schedule. Although we are closed during July and August, we do accept visits if a mutually convenient time can be arranged.

Mail Order

Plants that grow from bulbs, corms, or hardy crowns, such as lilies, trilliums, and Jack-in-the-Pulpits, are available through mail while they are dormant. For most species, the best time for mailing is usually from mid-September to mid-October. The price of the plants is the same as at the Garden; the cost of packaging and shipping is additional. We accept payment by check or money order. As we are a small business, we do not have an E-mail account.

Prices

With the exception of some particularly important biennials, we sell only well-developed, blooming size perennials in 5.5"" square pots or larger. Our prices accordingly fall into two categories:

"Short Maturity Plants," those that reach blooming size in four years or under, which we sell for $8.00 Can. Examples of this category are Hepatica, Hepatica acutiloba, and Cardinal Flower Lobelia cardinalis.

"Long-term Maturity Plants," those that reach blooming size from five to seven or more years, which we sell for $10.00 to $12.00 Can. Examples of this category are the Canada lily (Lilium canadense) and our two trillium species, (Trillium grandiflorum and Trillium erectum),all of which can take up to seven years to reach blooming size, and require several re-pottings along the way to ensure good growth.

We have recently added Lady's Slippers to our nursery. We now offer the two yellow species, Cypripedium calceolus pubescens and Cypripedium claceolus parviflorum for $25 per mature stem. The Large Pink (Showy) Lady's Slipper is $35.00 per mature stem.
